When dry it has a slight yellow tint that easily sands with a high grit paper. If you want a highly smooth finish with no marks at all you can use a 'light weight' joint compound as a final or fourth coat. Three layers of compound each applied wider than the other are the norm. mesh tape is a fast fix and the only place i would use it is on exspansion joints. place cut in, pressing it deep into the crack or until flat. You can get them in various timed setting mixes, perhaps the 45 min. the proper way is to cut you out strips of sheet rock. You can use regular compound but would be better to use one of the setting type powder compounds. Joint compound when it has set produces the hardest and strongest seam. if this is in flats they will bust out and drop or crack. As far as there being or using specific types of compound for filling nail dimples and seams, you should use joint compound for both. The seams that are created when drywall panels are installed must be filled with 'joint compound' (or 'spackle, mud, compound,) and seam tape (paper or fiberglass) in order to produce a smooth flat surface.
